I’ve never been a great fan of the way conventional voicemail works on mobile phones. Then along came the iPhone and simplified it with visual voicemail. Problem solved. Well, almost.
Ideally I wanted to manage my voicemail on the web just like Gmail. Google Voice would be perfect but it hasn’t reached the UK yet.
Then I came across Ribbit via JP Rangaswami and Kevin Marks. Ribbit effectively takes over your phone and handles your voicemail and call routing to other numbers. Currently it’s more of a telephony/ web platform and promises great things for the future but right now the service is very buggy and the iPhone app extremely temperamental (it hasn’t been updated since December 2009).
I needed something that actually worked and I found it in UK startup HulloMail. It works in a similar way to Ribbit (and I assume Google Voice) by taking over your phone and handling all your voicemail in an extremely efficient manner.
Signing up is quick and simple and it integrates with Gmail beautifully. The iPhone app works a treat and bar the inclusion of simple call forwarding/ routing to other numbers (which apparently they are working on) HulloMail is definitely the best service of its kind available in the UK.
Excellent design blog.
Simple To Do app on web and iPhone.
